Aftersun

Released by A24 in the US and MUBI in the UK and Ireland on 18 November 2022

Oh no…now THIS is our favourite movie of the year!!

Aftersun stars Paul Mescal who is (like always!) excellent as Calum, a Scottish father who has gone on a package holiday with his daughter Soph.

Wells’s movie ripples and shimmers like a swimming pool of mystery - Guardian

This is an exciting debut feature film from British writer & director Charlotte Wells. You may also spot, eff favourite, Barry Jenkins in the production credits too.

Aftersun is a dreamy story about childhood memories and the sensitive relationship between a recently divorced father and his daughter.

We mostly experience the film from the view of nine-year-old newcomer Francesca Corio who plays Calum’s daughter. She doesn’t quite understand the relationship between her parents and wonders why her father still says “Love you” to her mother at the end overheard conversations.

An unexpected and enjoyable aspect of the movie is the lack of malice or impending doom, which is often a feature in this genre. Soph, who has a close relationship with Calum, is nearing teenage years but her father’s life before her birth is a mystery to her.

Throughout the film, we experience that feeling of spending time with loved family members but never fully knowing their past, or how their history influences the present.

The 90’s aesthetic and soundtrack are blurred with sun bleached cinematography and dreamlike flashbacks, making this a mysterious and unforgettable feature.

It is quite simply a joy to watch.

In UK Cinemas from 18 November 2022
