28 Years Later
Releasing in the UK by Sony Pictures on 20 June 2025.
Over 20 years since the release of 28 Days Later, a post-apocalyptic horror film that redefined and reinvigorated the zombie genre, director Danny Boyle returns with his third instalment in the series. 28 Years Later not only marks the return of Boyle as director (as Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo took the helm for 28 Weeks Later), but also Alex Garland as writer, and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, all of whom worked on the first film. Despite not confirmed to appear in the film itself, 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy instead served as an executive producer on this latest instalment.
As the name suggests, 28 Years Later takes place 28 years after the events of the first film; after the Rage virus escaped a medical research laboratory, survivors have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One group lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When a father and his son leave the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, they discover secrets, wonders, and horrors of the outside world.
Like its previous instalments, 28 Years Later features an absolutely stacked cast of exciting British talent, including Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Sinners star Jack O’Connell. Unlike its previous instalments however, this film was primarily shot on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, a cinematic choice popularised in recent years by films such as Sean Baker’s Tangerine (2015) and Dev Patel’s Monkey Man (2024).
Whilst reviews are strictly embargoed, the first trailer put out by Sony at the end of last year was enough to get us (and the rest of the world) hyped for the new film, amassing over 10 million views in under 48 hours as it utilised Taylor Holmes’ eerie recitation of Rudyard Kipling’s unsettling marching poem ‘Boots’ to great cinematic effect. If the fear instilled in us by the 2 minute video is anything to go by, we’re definitely going to be hiding behind our popcorn when 28 Years Later hits the big screen in June!
Don’t Miss!
